What Is ASD?

Every Autism Profile Is Neurologically Unique.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is associated with dysregulated connectivity between brain regions. Specifically, patterns in alpha and theta activity that affect sensory processing, attention, emotional regulation, and social communication.

Unlike a one-size-fits-all approach, QEEG-guided neurofeedback maps your child’s specific brain connectivity profile and builds a training protocol around it. No two ASD protocols at North Austin Neurofeedback are identical.

What Research Shows About Neurofeedback for ASD

ASD neurofeedback research has grown significantly in recent years, with studies showing improvements in cognitive efficiency, sensory processing, and social responsiveness.

increase in cognitive efficiency reported in ASD neurofeedback research (Rezaee et al., 2025).

Individualized

Every ASD protocol is built from a QEEG brain map because no two autism profiles are neurologically identical (Coben et al., 2014).

Non-Med

Drug-free, non-invasive — safe for children with sensory sensitivities (Russo, G. M., Balkin, R. S., & Lenz, A. S. 2022).

Our ASD Protocol

Sensory-Aware SMR Neurofeedback at North Austin Neurofeedback

SMR (sensorimotor rhythm) neurofeedback is the one of the most studied protocol for ASD, with evidence showing improvements in sensory regulation, attention, and social responsiveness. Every protocol starts with a QEEG brain map to ensure we’re targeting your child’s specific patterns.

Sessions are adapted for sensory needs. Quieter environments, flexible pacing, and no physical discomfort. Parents are kept informed throughout and can expect a trained technician to explain what patterns are being addressed and what to watch for at home.

ASD FAQ

Common Questions About Neurofeedback for Autism

Honest answers to the questions we hear most often.

two nurses in blue scrubs embracing
What age can children with autism start neurofeedback?

We work with children as young as 4. The earlier we begin, the more neuroplasticity we can leverage for meaningful change.

Will neurofeedback change my child’s personality?

No. Neurofeedback targets dysregulation — not identity, interests, or personality traits. Many families find their child becomes more regulated without losing what makes them uniquely themselves.

How many sessions are typically needed?

Most ASD protocols involve 30–50 sessions depending on the individual profile. Progress is monitored through regular QEEG re-assessments.

Can neurofeedback be combined with ABA or speech therapy?

Yes. Neurofeedback works synergistically with other therapies — many families find their child becomes more responsive to ABA, speech, and OT after neurofeedback stabilizes their regulation.

Is it sensory-friendly?

Yes. Sessions are adapted for sensory needs — quieter environments, flexible seating, and a calm clinical setting. Gil will discuss specific accommodations during your free consultation.
