Neurofeedback Sessions — North Austin Neurofeedback

What Happens in a Neurofeedback Session.

Sessions at North Austin Neurofeedback are relaxed and non-invasive. Here’s exactly what to expect from your first visit through your final session.

Many clients are surprised by how comfortable neurofeedback sessions are. There is no effort, no discomfort, and no equipment that interacts with your brain, only sensors that listen to it.

Your First Visit

The First Appointment Step by Step

Your first visit is an intake, not a training session. A certified clinician takes the time to understand your full history, symptoms, and goals before designing anything. This typically takes 60–90 minutes and includes your QEEG brain map.

Sensors are placed on your scalp, and your brainwave activity is recorded for 20–30 minutes while you sit quietly. Your clinician then analyzes the recording and, in many cases, the first training session begins in the same visit.

What to Expect

Every Session — What’s Happening

Ongoing sessions are typically 30–45 minutes of active neurofeedback training. Here’s what the experience looks and feels like.

Comfortable Seated Position

You sit in a relaxed chair.

Sensors Placed on Scalp

Small sensors are placed on your scalp using a cap or gel. This is painless and takes just a few minutes to set up.

Real-Time Brainwave Feedback

Software reads your brainwave activity in real time and rewards healthier patterns instantly as they occur.

No Active Effort Required

You don’t try to do anything. The training happens at the neurological level and your brain responds to the feedback automatically.

Visual or Audio Rewards

When your brain produces healthier patterns, you hear a tone or see a visual change. This is the reward signal that drives learning.

Relaxed and Often Restful

Most clients find sessions deeply relaxing. Some nearly fall asleep and that’s perfectly fine.

No Discomfort

Sensors only read electrical signals. Nothing is sent into the brain. No medication, no stimulation.

Progress Tracked Session-to-Session

A certified technician reviews your data after each session and adjusts your protocol as your brain responds. It’s never a static template.

Preparing for Sessions

Simple Preparation. No Special Requirements

Very few preparation requirements. The main factors that support good training are basic wellness habits you’re likely already practicing.

✓ Eat normally

✓ Come well-hydrated

✓ Avoid alcohol the night before

✓ Get a reasonable night’s sleep

✓ No special clothing needed

✓ You can drive before and after

✓ Headphones welcome if you prefer audio

✓ Sessions are quiet

Session Outcomes

What Clients Typically Notice Across Sessions

Progress in neurofeedback tends to be gradual and cumulative with specific patterns of improvement emerging across the protocol.

Sessions 1–5

Initial orientation. Many clients notice improved sleep quality and reduced reactivity in the first few sessions (Hammond, D. C. 2011).

Sessions 10–20

Many clients notice meaningful changes in their primary target symptom — focus, mood, anxiety, or trauma response (Arns et al. 2009)

Sessions 20–40

Full protocol results consolidate. Many clients report lasting improvements that persist after training ends (Hammond, D. C. 2011).

Arns, M., et al. (2009). Efficacy of Neurofeedback Treatment in ADHD. Clinical EEG and Neuroscience, 40(3), 180–189. Clinically meaningful changes typically emerge within 10–20 sessions across multiple neurofeedback protocols.
Hammond, D. C. (2011). What is neurofeedback: An update. Journal of Neurotherapy, 15(4), 305–336. https://doi.org/10.1080/10874208.2011.623090

Session Frequency

How Often Should You Train for Best Results?

Consistency matters more than frequency — but more sessions per week generally means faster results.

2–3x Per Week

The optimal frequency for most clients. Produces the fastest results and strongest consolidation of new brain patterns.

1x Per Week

Effective for clients with scheduling constraints. Progress is meaningful, just at a slower pace.

Daily (Take-Home)

Available through our take-home program. Most effective for clients wanting the fastest possible results.

Maintenance Sessions

After completing a protocol, some clients return for occasional sessions to reinforce and sustain progress.

Remote & Take-Home Sessions

Train From Home — With Full Clinical Oversight

Our take-home neurofeedback program is clinically identical to in-office training. You begin with a QEEG brain map at our North Austin office, then professional-grade equipment is taken home with you. Pre-configured for your protocol.

A certified clinician reviews your session data remotely and adjusts your protocol as your brain responds. Most clients train 3–5 days per week at home. Available across Texas.

Session Questions

Common Questions About Neurofeedback Sessions

Honest answers to the questions we hear most often.

two nurses in blue scrubs embracing
How often do I need to come in?

Most clients come 2–3 times per week for the most efficient training. Once per week is also effective, just at a slower pace.

How long until I notice results?

Most clients notice meaningful changes within 10–15 sessions. Sleep and mood often improve first. Full results develop over a complete protocol.

Can I drive after a session?

Yes. Neurofeedback does not impair driving. Some clients feel relaxed after sessions — similar to after meditation — but this passes quickly.

Can I do neurofeedback remotely?

Yes. Our take-home program allows for remote neurofeedback sessions. The clinical-grade equipment goes home with you.

What should I bring to sessions?

Nothing is required. Some clients bring headphones. Wear comfortable clothing. Arrive a few minutes early for your first session.
